If there is one show that has made it big all across the globe, then it has to be Sesame Street. With over 4000 episodes across 4 decades, it has become iconic in children’s television. The series is best known for its Muppets characters – fuzzy humanoids who have distinct personalities. Their personalities reflect the personalities of humans, if taken to an exaggerated level. One of the most long-lived of the Muppets is Oscar The Grouch – in fact he has been around since the first season of the show. As such Oscar The Grouch costumes are pretty popular among certain circles.
Oscar the Grouch is a green Grouch living out of a trash can. To be completely honest, in the first season Oscar was orange, but this was changed in the succeeding season. Calling Oscar a grouch would be right on at least two levels. He is indeed quite gruff and not particularly friendly, and there is also the fact that he is a member of the Grouch species. His garbage can home actually contains an inter-dimensional gate that connects to his home world of Grouchland. He can be kind at rare occasions though.
Though he might seem to be quite dislikable, he actually serves as a living lesson in tolerance and respect. He can live quite well alongside the other characters on Sesame Street, regardless of how different their lifestyles, worldviews, and appearances are.

Here are some facts about Oscar that you may not yet know. Oscar is actually still orange, and is only green because he admittedly never bathes. He even refers to his exterior as moss, which is indeed green. Also, Oscar is either modified or replaced depending on the localization of Sesame
Street. In the Portuguese localization for example, he lives out of a barrel, whereas the Pakistani version has him living out of a rusty oil barrel.
Oscar, who does live inside a trash receptacle of some sort, does like collecting often seemingly useless junk, and also does a lot of recycling, albeit sometimes with rather whimsical and worthless results. If anything else, he also serves as a role model for kids, who can learn about improvisation and recycling from him.
Of course, Oscar is a bit of a prankster, particularly towards Big Bird. Oscar calls Big Bird his friend, and this is probably true, since Big Bird never begrudges Oscar for his rudeness or for his ultimately harmless pranks.
The bottom of his trash can sometimes seems to go missing, or at the very least is cut to allow his legs to poke through, since his legs can sometimes be seen. Another way to look at his garbage can being “bottomless” is the fact that he says he has complete amenities inside – including a farm, a bowling alley, a swimming pool, and a piano.

This kind of space bending capability is probably why he loves living in his garbage can in the first place. When it comes to costumery, there is little to change about Oscar. An Oscar the Grouch costume would be fuzzy and green with the brown unibrow and large round eyes. Such a costume cannot be rightly called an Oscar the Grouch costume if it did not include a trash can. Fortunately, many such costumes include a screen-printed lower body, which is open at the bottom to let your feet through.
